Sunday Ratings: Ten is Lucky Number for Academy Awards

Some watching the Oscars last night may have criticized Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin’s jokes, Farrah Fawcett’s snub, the choreographed Best Song segment or even Sarah Jessica Parker’s dress—but at least they were watching.
Yesterday’s coverage of the 82nd Annual Academy Awards attracted the show’s largest in five years. The telecast, which honored ten films for the first time since 1943 , pulled in 41.3 million - up from 2009’s 36.3 million. The 3 1/2-hour broadcast also earned a 13.1 rating, the highest number in three years.
Don’t be surprised if the Academy decides to nominate eleven films in 2011.

- Chuck (NBC, 8pm): “Sarah resolves to keep her relationship with Shaw (Brandon Routh) purely professional.” It’s hard not knowing why all the girls call him a “Superman” around the water cooler.
- The Buried Life (MTV, 10pm): “The crew hits both coasts while attempting to land an appearance on late-night TV.” I hear Carson Daly is always looking to fill a few guest seats.
- Hoarders (A&E, 10pm): “A mother of 12 who sleeps in a homeless shelter because conditions at home are bad is profiled.” Note to Nadya Suleman: Hoarding children can make you homeless.

Penn, Winslet, Cruz to Present at Academy Awards

Sean Penn, Kate Winslet and Penelope Cruz have all been named presenters for the upcoming Oscars. The screen stars are just three of the many celebrities who will hand out the statues at next month’s ceremony.
Last year, Sean won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Milk, while Kate gave a teary acceptance speech after being awarded the Best Actress gong for 2008’s The Reader.
Penelope - who took home the Best Supporting Actress honor for Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2009 - is up for another accolade this year. The 35-year-old Spanish beauty has been nominated for her supporting role in musical movie Nine.

Steve Martin’s Risky Career Move

Steve Martin was “playing chicken with his own career” when he signed up to host the Academy Awards.
Alec Baldwin - the comedian and actor’s co-host for the show - joked Steve had actually tried to avoid being involved with the show alongside him. “They actually went to him first and said, ‘Would you do it with Alec?’ He said, ‘Of course, I won’t do it with Alec,’” the 30 Rock star said.
“I actually said, ‘Yes, I would do it with Alec,’ assuming he would pass and I was safe,” Martin countered. “You were playing chicken with your own career,” Baldwin added.

Alec Baldwin Not Feeling Academy Awards Pressure

Alec Baldwin isn’t nervous about next year’s Academy Awards. The 30 Rock star is co-hosting next year’s ceremony with Steve Martin and believes there are higher expectations on the comic actor.
“It is all on Steve. Steve Martin has done this before, while for me it is the first time. All the pressure is on Steve Martin,” he quipped.
Despite his confidence, the actor is still amazed he was given the job and keeps waiting for someone to cancel his booking. “I am doing it until they change their mind. I do have some preparations, but it is a secret,” Alec joked.
Steve – who fronted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards - and Alec are the first people to co-host the ceremony since the first Oscars show in 1929.
The 82nd Academy Awards take place on March 7 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

It was just announced that two vets of Saturday Night Live‘s stage will combine their live audience experience to front next year’s Academy Awards.
Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin’s dual selection comes just one year after Hugh Jackman received praise for his Oscars gig. It also comes one week after Ricky Gervais was appointed to the 2010 Golden Globes post.
“Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event,” Adam Shankman, this year’s producer, said.

Sunday Ratings: Oscars Rebound from Record-Low

Yesterday’s tradition-breaking awards ceremony paid off nicely for ABC. Hugh Jackman instead of a comedian as host? Previous award winners presenting the acting categories? Both were gambles that contributed to the telecast’s ratings rebound.
- The 81st Annual Academy Awards drew in 36.3 million viewers. That’s up from last year’s record low (32 million) when No Country for Old Men won Best Film.
- The broadcast became the third smallest Oscars ceremony ever. (The 2003 telecast - Chicago‘s year - comes in behind at 33 million.)
- Despite it’s ranking in Academy history, the event was the most-watched entertainment program since the 2007 Oscars. That includes episodes of American Idol.
- The broadcast also had the best demos (12.1 in 18-49) for any entertainment-related program since Idol in February 2008.
